I think one of the coolest things about the Bear Lake Aquatics Base is what they offer for the Aviation Merit Badge. In fact, it’s one of the reasons we’re going to BLAB again this summer. Boys who register for this merit badge get to complete requirement 2 by actually going up in an aircraft! How many other scout camps do you know of that gives a boy this kind of Aviation experience? Not many that I’m aware of… at least not in Utah.
The last time we spent the week at BLAB back in 2011, the aircraft being used was a single engine 4-seater provided by Utah State University. We drove the boys out to the Bear Lake County Airport, a small airfield about 20 minutes from camp, where they completed the bookwork, built a model and waited for their turn to climb aboard.
While I thought that was awesome, I didn’t think it could get any better.
Now as we look forward to attending BLAB again next month, we recently learned that the aircraft has been changed to a helicopter that operates right from camp… SCHWEET!! Our troop is so excited for this!! What a great opportunity for scouts who attend this camp.
Here’s an in-flight video clip of what to expect from a scout who went up last year:
