Crystal Hot Springs in December has been a tradition in our troop since 2012, and this month’s scout outing was an historic one for sure.
It was the last one of the year, the last one of a decade and, most significantly, the last one as Boy Scouts of America for the vast majority of LDS young men across the country.
Our 8th year at Crystal Hot Springs for a December Scout Outing
This end of an era comes with very mixed feelings. There are a few things I won’t miss about the BSA, but there is a whole lot more I will.
Scouting has stretched me in similar ways we ask our boys to learn and grow. My journey has been one of many opportunities to try new things and explore new places while reaching beyond my own personal comfort zone.
I have gained a tremendous amount of appreciation for our country, for the flag that represents it and for the many men and women who sacrifice so much to preserve our freedom and way of life.
Scouting has also done a lot to help me keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.
I really thought I’d be involved in scouting for life as I truly embraced this program over the past 10 years. I was looking forward to having sons get involved in the program and eventually supporting grandsons as scouts.
I know I could stay involved at a community level but not sure I completely agree with where Scouts BSA is headed as an organization. That said, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
